Many thanks to everyone who participated! If you see any mistakes or omissions in the master list, please email the mods and we'll get it fixed up ASAP.

We'll be editing the posts now to put all the author/artist and beta information in there as well, but it's going to take some time. Please have a little patience; we'll get there.

WHAAAAAAAT. I guessed [personal profile] penaltywaltz for Got Milk, and everyone else agreed with my guess and we all walked straight off a cliff that did not lead anywhere even close to [personal profile] language_escapes!

Aaaaaaaand *drumroll* congratulations to [personal profile] iwantthatcoat for being the single sneakiest human on the planet!

[personal profile] iwantthatcoat, did you create a separate AO3 name SOLELY so you could leave a misdirecting comment on your own fic???

YOU WIN HOLMESTICE. :D

I am honored by the title and intend to wear it well until it is likely stolen from me next Holmestice!

omfg, they did, they did, they did, and I've been howling with laughter ever since I first understood what they did and why! FOR WEEKS NOW I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THE REST OF YOU TO FIND OUT.

Never again will someone be able to blithely say "but they kudosed it" on the guessing post...! Never. Again. About anyone. Not without the niggling thread of doubt...

I definitely wouldn't have guessed [personal profile] language_escapes for "Got Milk". SNEAKY SNEAKY.

Well—- Ummmm—- Not SOLEY. I mean, I do intend to publish non-fandom works under that name... eventually. But—

Ok, yeah. Yeah I did.

And I think that you got it anyway (even if it was strictly impossible...or at least *highly improbable*) means you found me out.

It wasn’t *just* about being sneaky. I also wanted to be able to comment on and kudos writers freely without thinking it would affect the game too much. But it was mostly about being sneaky.

I know! I made the same mistaken deduction about Elementary + art, and never looked back... [personal profile] language_escapes is always one of those sneaky chameleons around these parts.

(And yes, to respond to you at last, 221B Baker Towers was me! Of course it was! I'm so bad at disguising myself. I'm SO PLEASED by how we've increased that 'verses works on AO3 by, what, 40%? Yayyy.)

YOU ALSO BOOKMARKED YOUR OWN FIC AND MARKED IT "TO READ."

I got it like...one third. But not all three thirds!

Well, you could just log out and comment/kudos anonymously -- hell, you could even type in your own username into the little anon-username box, if you wanted to be able to have those convos as your own self as opposed to an alternate persona. As long as they're all done while logged out, no one would be able to say for sure which comments, if any, were on your own works.

It did occur to me that someone who didn’t offer art could have made Got Milk, but then it opened up so many possibilities that I would have had no guesses at all.

And YAY, that is a large percentage! 😊

[personal profile] iwantthatcoat 2018-12-21 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I did expect some scrutiny!

If this new person was suddenly leaving kudos, perhaps someone might be curious enough as to who they were to look at the profile. And a blank one just wouldn’t do. Why not create a basic profile? With a UK profile pic. And bookmark some stuff. ;)

I set it up shortly after last Holmestice.

Turns out I didn’t have to do that because the name only came up when I submitted the fic to the Mods. But it was fun getting in character.

But none of those seemed as much fun.

I just wish MORE of what was on tumblr has been archived to AO3. We're in danger of so much of that fandom being lost if tumblr continues to tumble.

I adored both the 221B Baker Towers fics and I have never heard of it before! Where does it come from???
tei: Rabbit from the Garden of Earthly Delights (Default)

[personal profile] tei 2018-12-21 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, true. I mean, even as it stands, I couldn’t find some of the posts that I remembered seeing and basing my characters on— not because they were flagged, I don’t think, just because tumblr is a terrible way of archiving content you might want to find again. :(

[personal profile] tei 2018-12-21 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It’s just a collection of tumblr posts, basically. There’s no actual canon. It’s just “what if someone made an adaptation where xyz” and you can do what you want with it :D

Well, I think we all agree that iwantthatcoat wins this year's award for Holmesian Disguise, and that language_escapes is an un-catchable chameleon...and colebaltblue is also an un-catchable chameleon...and so is graycardinal... Gosh, what is this a chameleon sanctuary?

But another person snuck something past us, too: I had phoenixfalls placed for my own My Dearly Beloved Detective fic (thank you!) and never thought that maybe phoenixfalls, rather than keenir, wrote the Elementary pinch-hit as well. Nice!

Unfortunately I have to leave now, and I still owe a bunch of you responses, but back later; and once again this has been SO MUCH FUN! Thank you, mods!!

iirc, it's [tumblr.com profile] sophistory's brainchild: in 2012 they asked what if a contemporary-era Sherlock wasn't a toffee-nosed ponce with enough money to buy a fancy coat? But was instead a black kid from a council estate? What would Sherlock Holmes look like then? And the idea took off from there -- quite a few people wrote up headcanons, created graphics or vids, wrote fic...

For a while, someone was collecting them all at the [tumblr.com profile] 221b-baker-towers tumblr, although that blog is now a few years out-of-date. The smallest fraction of material is archived at AO3, but nothing like enough of it.

Many thanks to the mods for running such a wonderful exchange and to mightymads for creating such a fantastic gift. I will definitely be back next year. Happy Solstice and Holmestice!

btw, we run the exchange twice a year -- you could come back and do it again as soon as the summer!

Muahahahahaha!

Although, y'know, to be fair to everyone guessing - I am openly REALLY BAD AT ART. I have no skill for it whatsoever. What I DO have is access to a basic graphic design program that I have to use at my job, and the login information memorized, so...

But I'm glad I wasn't easy to figure out!

I’m really happy that you liked the gift! (I was somewhat worried about it since I participated for the first time).
