As Sang said, it began simply as a meta by sophistory on Tumblr – in response to BBC Sherlock to start with, but also to Sherlock Holmes adaptations as whole: Sherlock Holmes is seen as quintessentially British, but within that is an assumption of what "British" means: white, English, upper-class. There are lots of people who aren't those things, but are just as British! So what if Holmes were...Black? poor? living on a council estate in a rough part of London? and just as smart as, say, Sherlock in the BBC version, but society doesn't give him a pass for his "eccentric" behaviors the way it does with BBC Sherlock...

Anyway, you can read the original concept post HERE. The originator, sophistory, also created two fantastic, evocative art pieces: You See, But You Do Not Observe and like a spider in the centre of its web.

Then mindtardis created a couple of fantastic vids – yes, vids, despite there being no source material for this 'verse! They headcanoned the roles with actors from "Attack the Block".

And for a while, people on Tumblr were tossing around and discussing wonderful headcanons (e.g. great and varying ideas about what Irene Adler's story might look like in this 'verse!) but like Tei said, so much of it has gotten lost to the wilds of Tumblr. These Tumblr discussions are also the origin of the idea that Watson might himself be from Afghanistan, rather than a soldier invalided back from war in Afghanistan (that wasn't part of the concept originally – but that's the whole idea of the 'verse, that it's an open universe and anyone can add to it as they see fit).

Anyway, that's way more info than you asked for, but I thought (hoped!) maybe others might come by and be interested, too. I think the 221B Baker Towers idea is SO brilliant, and I'm over the moon if we've introduced it to a few more people! (Sang has been requesting it in Holmestice forever – I must have first learned about it from her – and I'm just so thrilled that we've now had 221B Baker Towers as part of Holmestice!)

Well count me in for next time! I am a fan of the Watson and Holmes comic—specificlly Irene Adlero. I met Lyndsay Faye and told her her Irene is just about the only adaptation I have liked so far. Course that Holmes doesn’t seem council estate poor, certainly not Mycroft. Glad to have another version to delve into.

I finally read the Watson and Holmes comic just recently, so I'll be able to offer that next Holmestice!

But I've only read the first volume; I thought I'd heard that the second volume is a collection of short stories by different people, and thus kind of uneven? But it sounds like you're saying it's worth it and I should get it!

The second volume is uneven, yes. But Lynday Faye's story is very nice, and totally makes me slash Violetta Smith and Irene Adlero. Just in case that kind of thing is a draw for you. ;-)

Agreed. I only remember Adlero and Smith’s stories

All right, it's on my list. :-)
