"Watson," said he, "if it should ever strike you that I am getting a little over-confident in my powers, or giving less pains to a case than it deserves, kindly whisper 'Norbury' in my ear, and I shall be infinitely obliged to you."
— The Adventure of the Yellow Face
Because even Sherlock Holmes sometimes needs someone to look over his work.
If you're available to beta or Britpick for someone, please leave a comment with the following information:
Email: (or other preferred contact method)
Types of fanworks you can beta: (fic, art, graphics, vids, etc.)
Fandoms: (Doyle, BBC, Elementary, 22nd Century, etc.)
Pairings: (it's helpful to name what you are willing AND not willing to work with)
Ratings: (if you will or won't beta explicit sex, graphic violence, etc.)
If you have any other limitations or areas of expertise, please feel free to include them! Suggestions include fic length, time constraints, availability, areas of special knowledge, or particular strengths or weaknesses.
If you need a beta, please check the comments to see if someone is right for you. (Show a care with your anonymity, please, and refrain from leaving public comments that suggest what you're making for the exchange.) If you can't find who you need in the comments, please email the mods at holmesticemods@gmail.com, and we'll help you find someone.
Also! We recommend sherlock60's Round 5 Discussion Posts. scfrankles spent over a year compiling historical linkspams on topics inspired by the original canon stories, and then generously shared what she learned with all of us. I highly recommend the collection for anyone needing inspiration or background for Victorian- or Edwardian-era fanworks!

Date: 2025-05-05 11:28 pm (UTC)Fanworks: fic
Fandoms: ACD canon, Granada, Rathbone, Elementary, A Study in Emerald (and BBC at a pinch; personally, I think fanon!BBC is more compelling than canon!BBC.)
Pairings: almost any, I think. I'm shipping-agnostic about Holmes and Watson; I don't ship Holmes and The Woman; I like Mary Morstan and support her in whatever relationship(s) she wants.
Ratings: Up to M effectively (I'm not squeamish, but I am asexual-ish, so you might want someone with a more active imagination/libido for your sex scenes.)
Special knowledge: New York neighborhoods, history (general), and classical music (*classical in its popular rather than precise sense; I listen to everything from Bach to Britten... and beyond, if you think Elementary!Holmes would listen to Stockhausen, for instance.) At the risk of seeming immodest (ahem) I do think I'm good at pseudo-Victorian prose.

Date: 2025-05-07 10:06 pm (UTC)Types of fanworks you can beta: Fic. You can send me other stuff, but I can't guarantee I'll be able to give useful feedback.
For podfic or other audio, 10 minutes is probably about the maximum I'd be able to listen to.
Fandoms: I'll beta-read any fandom that no one else has volunteered to beta, except for fandoms associated with Neil Gaiman.
I'm reasonably familiar with Charlotte Holmes, The Seven-Percent Solution (book only), The Affair of the Mysterious Letter, Shirley & Jamila, kitten!Holmes, and Sherlock: Find Hidden Objects - plus ACD & BBC, which others have already volunteered for. (For non-Holmes fandoms, check my AO3 bookmarks (same username) or the sticky post on my journal.) It's been a while since I watched the movies starring Robert Downey, Jr., seen the first Enola Holmes film, or read Professor Challenger, but I can brush up on them if you give me some advance notice.
I'm also perfectly happy beta-reading for fandoms I don't know. In previous years, I've beta-read for Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century and the Watson & Holmes comics.
Pairings: No incest, nothing that would be illegal in real life by reasonable, modern-day standards, anything else is fine.
Ratings: AO3 ratings General Audience or Teen & Up are always fine. I might be willing to do a higher rating as long as there's no explicit sex - if you're interested, DM me with more info.
