If you haven't added your fanwork to the AO3 collection, and you want to, you can add it here: Holmestice Exchange - Winter 2022. If your work has been on AO3 all along and is in a fast-moving tag ("Sherlock (TV)" or "Sherlock Holmes/John Watson", for example), you might choose to update its publication date to today, so that your work has its turn at the top of the tag.

Please come back and join us for our spring round! Sign-ups will open in March. You can follow us at [twitter.com profile] holmestice (twitter), [tumblr.com profile] holmestice (tumblr), or [community profile] holmestice (dreamwidth) for updates!

Many thanks to everyone who participated! If you see any mistakes or omissions in the master list, please email the mods and we'll get it fixed up ASAP.

We'll be editing the posts now to put all the author/artist and beta information in there as well, but it's going to take some time. Please have a little patience; we'll get there.

Wow, you were a busy bee, [personal profile] iwantthatcoat! I am impressed! And now I know who to bug for more Chasing Waterfalls. :D

I managed to get two of my four guesses right! That might be a record for me. As always, I am blown away by all of the creativity in this exchange. Thank you to everyone for participating!

A big thank you to the mods, new and old, as well!

That story actually is a sequel. They are now all linked on AO3. And I have to write another because I can’t leave Jon like that. I hope it takes less than three years.

Oh wow, this is so cool to see! So many of the folks I'm familiar with from past rounds really did something unexpected and different this time, to amazing results! I was gobsmacked to see that graycardinal really did branch into podficcing for my sake, I am so lucky!!! I'm also delighted to learn that sanspatronymic did Basil of Baker Street art?!!?! And starfishstar did a podfic this round, how wonderful!!!

And let me get this straight, iwantthatcoat was becoming a mod this round and ALSO, SOMEHOW created THREE incredible works?!?! You are AMAAAAAZING!!!!

Cheers, cheers, and more cheers for everyone! And all thanks and best wishes to the mods, old and new. Happy holidays :)

Thank you :)
Apparently, when faced with outside social pressures I now know my coping mechanism is to write *more*, not less. I assumed it would be the latter, so I didn’t even sign up. But it is most definitely the former. Obsessive, all-in-a-few-days type writing. I think I had things I was working hard at avoiding! (Things are improving now, tho, phew!)

I ought to observe here that I've actually had half an eye on committing podfic for awhile now, but only recently acquired what I deemed to be marginally sufficient hardware to get away with making credible recordings - and just prior to the round, had been poking lightly at Audacity for other reasons. And it turns out to be a very good thing that I had a bit of college-radio-DJ experience back in the day, so that I had some idea of how to work with multiple tracks once the project was underway.

That said, when I got the match assignment and realized that recording Art in the Blood was a legitimate prospect, that absolutely settled the question of what I was going to do for this round, and I am delighted that it's been so well received.

I'd like to thank everyone for a wonderful round of Holmestice, which produced so many lovely works. I couldn't name all my favorite works if I tried, so I'll stick shouting out the people who gifted things to me: [personal profile] iwantthatcoat, your three fics were incredible! How you found the time to put so much love into all of them, and into modding, I don't know, but I'm so impressed. [personal profile] rachelindeed, you've outdone yourself - two wonderful vids AND an amazing fic?! And mods, you've been so responsive and worked so hard behind the scenes. I needed to communicate through the mods at one point, and it was so quick and easy!

Happy holidays, folks!

I am so glad you enjoyed it! And we modded as a team, absolutely.
The real person to thank for yours is Vulgarweed. I’d been toying with writing something like that for a long time, and the closest I could get was some stuff I did for Purim which really wasn’t the level I wanted to write at as far as addressing things in the story itself. As I mentioned before, I was kinda…petrified is a good word…for how it would come across. So Vulgarweed convinced me that I more or less was being an idiot, although she wasn’t nearly that unkind in her word choice. And so I finally did it. And I’m so glad you liked it!

Wait, does this mean there's a chance I could maybe maybe convince you to join me at Purimgifts?? It's such a fun little fest, but so far nobody else I know participates. Can I tempt you...??

There… There is… There is a Purimgifts?
I somewhat recently moved (escaped may be the better term) from a location that was 0% Jewish per the city statistics. 0%.So I am a bit in shock at there being a Purim anything anywhere. I’m still reeling from the Target selling Hanukkah candles. (And people knowing what Bayit means.)

Of course I want in.

I wrote 2 Sherlock Purim stories. I will find some way to write more, you betcha. Where can I find this?

!! Yes, there is!

https://purimgifts.tumblr.com/faq
https://purimgifts.dreamwidth.org/
(They've also got a Discord this year for the first time, but I haven't had time to check it out.)

It actually begins quite soon: sign-ups and nominations (those two elements happen concurrently) open on January 2. (The dates of Purimgifts shift each year, of course, to match when Purim falls!)

The central tenet of the thing is that all works must "focus on characters who're at least one of WOMEN, JEWISH, or PERSECUTED BY EVIL VIZIERS". (Yes, that can include making non-canonically Jewish characters into Jewish characters, as long as the fic is in some way about their Jewishness.)

Also, each gift should be rather small, but you create three of them. (So that it's like getting a basket of Purim treats.) There's also a graphics/art part required, which I doubt you'll have any trouble with, but also their instructions are really good – it's thanks to Purimgifts that I finally learned how to properly embed images on AO3!

They use the same tag set of fandoms each year (rather than generating a whole new set each year like Yuletide does) but you can nominate any additional ones you want. I'm having trouble finding that tag set now, but presumably it will become clear at some point in the sign-up process! I know at least some Holmesian iterations have been in there though.

Hit me up if you have questions! Purimgifts is delightful!

A number of House MD fic writers participated in Purimgifts. I know that's not your favorite adaptation, just putting it out there. :)

I feel a need to jump in here and say something out loud that I have been telling various people offline for ages. And that's this:

This community of writers, by almost any measure I can think of, has been producing work for years that is at least as good as -- and not infrequently better than -- the body of work that's being published as professional Holmesian pastiche.

Which is to say, most of us are writing with a professional level of skill and craft. I would, in fact, venture to guess that a book-length manuscript in the vein of Astrakhan, I Perceive might very well crack a bestseller list and/or get itself onto various short-lists for literary awards. (Yes, [personal profile] iwantthatcoat, you really are that good. And you are far from the only one of us whose writing is that good. Astrakhan is a special case, I think, where sheer marketability is concerned, but it is far from the only work in our archive that's capable of jumping the fence.)

And the thing is, that fence is eminently jumpable these days. True, a significant chunk of Holmestice work is not publishable commercially because it's based on existing commercial adaptations (BBC Sherlock, Elementary, etc.), but a sizeable percentage of the overall collection could in fact be assembled, published and sold with no trouble at all now that the full original canon is entering the public domain. Nowadays, even much of the Holmes/Watson slash material could be included in that set - I have observed elsewhere that there is a non-trivial slash subtext in Lyndsay Faye's Holmesian works, and I know of at least one author self-publishing more overt Holmesian slash.

I hasten to note that I do NOT mean to imply that Holmestice as a fanwork exchange isn't just fine exactly as it is, or to suggest that any of us individually ought to stop playing in one or the other of the fannish and professional sandboxes in favor of the other. Indeed, Holmesian fiction is one of the very few categories where it's practical for one to play in both sandboxes at once (Wizard of Oz fandom is another). I just want to point out that the potential is there for anyone who wants to try out that adjacent sandbox, and that by my estimation quite a few of us might be well-received in it.

I know that [personal profile] mistyzeo and AO3's darcylindbergh have successfully published slashfic. (FFN's Riandra has also published Holmes fic, although it isn't shippy.) There's a small press dedicated to publishing stories like this.

Thank you for the compliment! I did publish something (outside of fandom) with Carnation Books, but it didn’t do well at all. I have toyed with a true pastiche/ACD AU, but I’m not sure where to send it. I know where to go with scrubbed BBC, but ACD has me at a loss. I am also not particularly good at novel-length writing, though if someone wanted it if I expanded it, I’m sure I’d find a way.
Maybe I’ll give it a go sometime. The vote of confidence is very much appreciated!

Congratulations, everyone! What a wonderful round, with such a variety of works. It's so delightful to see so many new folks here! And as rachelindeed said above, lots of long-time players have been branching out in all kinds of new directions, too, what fun!

As for my guesses, I got 5/7 right, which I suppose is not bad for a few guesses cobbled together in the last hours of the last possible day... More importantly, I am thrilled to have gone undetected! Didn't think I had any chance of pulling that off again this time (after all, I've done podfic before, so my voice Is Now Known). I'm sure someone would have gotten there if we'd all had more time and attention to spare for guessing this round, but we didn't, so I'll take it. ;)

Happy Holmestice, everyone!

Goodness, thank you! It's my usual collage/found image/manip approach; I can't Art, myself, (in the sense of being able to actually draw or anything wild like that) but it does make for a fun challenge to cobble together what's already there.
