holmestice | Winter 2021 Prompt Fest!

As announced earlier, we'll have open posting this December! Treats, prompt fills, sequels or inspired-bys, and whatever Holmesian projects you'd like to share. Works do not have to be exclusive to Holmestice. Works will not be anonymous, and have no minimum requirements. Works may be posted at your convenience to the collection (HolmesticeWinter21), which will go live on on December 1 and stay open for further posting until December 31. Alternatively, any time between Dec 1 and Dec 31, works may be posted directly to the Dreamwidth community.

We are also hosting a prompt fest! Please leave your prompts here in the comments, one prompt per comment.

In the comment subject line, please include:

Jon Watson has partial custody of his son Omare - I'd love to see him and Holmes getting to know each other. Big Weird Uncle vibes. Maybe Holmes and Watson take him on an outing together, maybe Watson gets called to an emergency at the hospital and Holmes has to mind Omare himself. You decide if H/W are platonic friends, a couple, or in some in-between stage. I only ask, please no Marie-bashing. Jon can be sad/angry about their breakup of course, but please don't make her into a terrible person with no redeeming qualities.

I would love something with Holmes and Watson figuring it all out when they retire, and making reference to the secret love confession. I know it's been done before, but it's always wonderful!

I'm increasingly uncomfortable consuming media based on characters who are active in police, copaganda, government surveillance, structural power, and invasion of privacy.

I'd love to read works where Holmes and Watson don't work with or mostly distrust the police; where the whole thing is an AU with completely different kinds of work; where Mycroft isn't "the British Government"; AUs where Gregson, Lestrade, Hopkins, etc are in other professions or are questioning their work as police officers; characters who challenge copaganda and solve problems/help people in other ways.

Mycroft as (over-)protective older brother is one thing; BBC Sherlock Mycroft reading therapist notes, planting bugs, using CCTV, kidnapping or interrogating people, etc, has become a major squick for me, in canon and fanon.

I know there already are fanworks and Holmes 'verses exploring these ideas; I just want MORE.

I would love a fic about a wrong-Holmes – there are many canons where Holmes is transplanted in time and finds a new Watson (see: 23C and 1994 Baker St.); this leads to the impression that Watsons are replaceable but Holmes is singular. I’d love to see this subverted and/or reversed, a fic in which Watson (who is just as singular) is the one transplanted who has to deal with a new (and subtly wrong) Holmes. There are canons with more unique Watsons that might lend themselves to this fairly naturally (Without a Clue and My Dearly Beloved Detective come to mind); I would also welcome an ACD/Granada/Ritchie-verse/Elementary AU fic for this prompt.

I am PhoenixFalls on AO3 as well, and would love any fic to be gifted to me there.

(Note: this prompt is inspired by the comic Sherlock Holmes vs. Zombies by Ian Edgington and Davide Fabbri, but there's nothing so specific in there that you couldn't do in a zombie AU of your own creation.)

I want the anxious and frenetic hurt/comfort aftermath of this panel (larger), wherein Holmes has just saved Watson from a zombie that had him literally in her clutches. A distraught Holmes checking Watson all over for bites or scratches and washing all the zombie goo off of him. Bonus points if Holmes ignores his own injuries in favour of checking over Watson, and Watson having opinions about that. I prefer neither of them getting zombified in the end, although I'm not about to tell an artist how to make cake.

I used male pronouns above, but feel free to switch that up: I also love genderswap and any of the genderbent 'verses.

I'd love to see some deeper exploration in regards to Irene Adler, specifically how she presents herself to the world and when she presents herself in certain ways. A bit of ACD Canon's Irene that I'm not sure has been explored (much) in more modern adaptations is how the Canon idea of her going out in "men's" clothing would be adapted to the present day, and whether she'd still identify as a cis woman or as a different gender altogether.

That would have been a great cliffhanger ending to a series that got a second season. As it is it's really disappointing. This seems so clearly their version of Reichenbach. Would LOVE to see a version of what the Return might have been like. Please include the growing friendship between Bea and Watson (from such an inauspicious beginning), and perhaps this Sherlock reverses the Came Back Wrong trope and comes back better? With some hope for the future?

I'm very interested in these (extremely) minor characters from ACD canon: Langdale Pike, Isadora Klein, and Mr Barker, and I'd love to see any of them featured in a BBC verse story. Please do include Sherlock himself, but otherwise everything else is up to you... Ships or no ships, any era of the show, any other characters.

I'd suggest picking one of the above characters, but if you want to include two or all three, I won't complain.

*I’m picturing ACD or RDJ, but there are loads of pastiches where Mycroft and Moriarty are occasionally unintentionally slashy.

I’ve always thought that Mycroft and Moriarty had a lot in common—they’re both secretly powerful geniuses with mundane day jobs involving math and they both rely a lot on others to get things done.

So…I’d really love to see fic where Mycroft and Moriarty get together, especially if they both each start out thinking they are simply taking the opportunity to learn more about the enemy/gain connections and somehow catch feelings. Beyond that, I’m open to multiple possibilities. Post-Reichenbach angst? Post Reichenbach fix-it fic? Humor involving the one Holmes who actually understands Dynamics of an Asteroid? Mycroft and Moriarty on the same side of a case? Bending of the Diogenes Club rules for sexy reasons? The possibilities are endless!

The character and mythos of Sherlock Holmes has often been described as immortal…so what if he was? I think it would be so interesting and/or hilarious to see all the ways Holmes would disguise his immortality and adapt to each decade. I also imagine that for someone who bonds to a few select people, finding companionship through the years would be especially difficult. My ao3 is marveling-under-an-open-sky.

Would love a different viewpoint in the world of Roger Zelazny's cult classic novel - certainly the best fantasy novel of all time to be wholly narrated by Jack the Ripper's dog! The Great Detective and his frequently-injured companion are a constant presence throughout the book, including one very surprising feat at the climax. Would absolutely love some of their POV about the creepy supernatural goings-on, their takes on the (other?) players of the Game, and what exactly is their stake in all this (oops sorry Count, I know stakes are a touchy subject). Just a bit of it written or drawn as a classic Holmes case study could be amazing!
