[personal profile] holmesticemods posting in [community profile] holmestice
Thank you so much for another wonderful round of Holmestice! The mods want to say THANK YOU to all the creators who joined us for this, our twentieth round -- especially given how tumultuous these last months have been. Being in this community with you is a joy and an honour.

Reveals and the Master List go up on June 20th. Until then, please enjoy and comment on all the lovely fanworks. Creators, please do NOT respond to Dreamwidth comments or post your works elsewhere on the Internet until reveals go up in the community. You may of course reply to comments on AO3, which preserves your anonymity.

In the meanwhile, stay tuned: treats are coming up! For anyone thinking of making a treat, we will accept treats right through until reveals, so if there's a prompt that inspires you, please have at it! Just use the regular submission guidelines and send your headers to holmesticemods@gmail.com.

If you'd like to guess who created what in this round, here's a list of all the contributors for the main gifts. (You'll have to put in some extra work to guess the treat-makers!) Go ahead and take a guess! It's all in good fun.

whereas in the tiny fandoms, they're so small anyway that most of the focus is on the main pairing?

My feeling - this is purely instinctual, I haven't gone looking for evidence - is that there's been a shift and the tiny fandoms used to skew more heavily towards gen. But I you're right that of course Holmes and/or Watson are the main draw, and so many people ship them that people end up writing the ship they share even if they might also be interested in gen?

That's fascinating about the More Holmes canons! I find all this really fun to ponder, too.

I'm really interested in the Holmes/Watson vs. other ships vs. gen aspect. I think you're right that there's less gen! I just went and checked the first Holmestice I did, which was spring 2017, and it had 11 Holmes/Watson entries (two of which also included other ships), 8 entries for other ships, and 12 gen entries. That's ~35% for Holmes/Watson, ~26% for other ships, and ~39% for gen. In comparison, the current round had 22 Holmes/Watson entries (~59%), 5 entries for other ships (~14%), and 10 gen entries (~27%). A very different distribution! But we'd have to look at all the rounds in between to see if it's a trend or if one of these is just an outlier.

That's really interesting, and my gut instinct thinks you're right that there used to be more More Holmes gen... Huh!

and so many people ship them that people end up writing the ship they share even if they might also be interested in gen?

Oh, that's such good insight. ...Especially since I know it's true for me! I've long shipped Johnlock in BBC Sherlock (though I'm also a fan there of gen and lots of other pairings) but I bet it would never even have crossed my mind to ship ACD Holmes/Watson, if I hadn't stumbled my way into wider Holmesian fandom via BBC! And for a whole bunch of the rare 'verses, my mind still default to gen H&W, though I'm certainly also not opposed to H/W. So if I match on someone who requests H/W in one of those verses, of course I'd be happy to write it for them. And so on until we have a big snowball of H/W. I'll have to ponder on that. Maybe I can offer a bunch of gen things next round!

And those are fascinating statistics, thank you! I know the mods have worked really hard over time to foster the current climate of the fest, where the rare 'verses are not just allowed but actively encouraged; maybe we'll collectively find a way to do the same for gen & rare pairs, too. :-)
