Don't get me wrong, I also love tropes and the like, but if you're wanting to experiment with time and form and space? Dooo eeet. Give me our heroes in the far future, the far past, other countries - or not. Set them in 221B and give me a slice of life, a case fic, the aftermath of A Case Gone Wrong. Put me in the middle with an unknown ending, a time of confusion, a side scene from something you're working on that doesn't have a home in that story.
