I really enjoy fics that explore classism and the impact it has on Holmes and Watson, who are depicted as barely scraping by (by gentlemen's standards) in the start of STUD, but become set-for-life as Watson's writings rocket Holmes to stardom. How does this affect them? Who has more money--Holmes or Watson? How do they feel about any income disparity between them? Do one or both them ever feel like a pauper in prince's clothing? How were they raised--is this a return to the financial status they'd both experienced as children, or a brand new experience?
I've also been really interested in the idea of Watson being Anglo-Indian in general and this question, posed by [Unknown site tag]scfrankles, in specific: "What if this Watson had an elder brother, also British born, who had inherited darker skin?" whereas Watson is lighter/light enough to pass. I haven't really answered the question of 'what would it mean for Watson to be Anglo-Indian' for myself yet, but the comments on this post really got me wondering about it: https://scfrankles.dreamwidth.org/
For pre-canon stuff, feel free to bring the teenage/young man angst! I like fics about discovering one's sexuality, about first loves and first heartaches. Anything that gives a sense of what kind of baggage Holmes and Watson brought with them into 221b (and bonus points for showing how they dealt with it later in life).
Speaking of young man angst... You may also wish to consider this canonical nugget about Watson playing rugby and imagine, if you will, Holmes's feelings on Watson as an athlete. His sexy, sexy feelings.
