Thank you so much for another wonderful round of Holmestice! The mods want to say THANK YOU to all the creators who joined us for this round. You put in a lot of hard work and made some really great fanworks.

Reveals and the Master List go up on December 21st. Until then, please enjoy and comment on all the lovely fanworks. Creators, please do NOT respond to Dreamwidth comments or post your fanwork elsewhere on the Internet until reveals go up in the community. You may of course reply to comments on AO3, which preserves your anonymity.

But we're not done yet -- treats are coming up! We'll continue to accept treats right through until reveals, so if there's a prompt for which you want to whip something up, please do! Just send it to holmesticemods@gmail.com using the regular submission guidelines.

I am SO far behind, and there are so many new and wonderful contributors, and even familiar faces have clearly branched out in new directions this round...so I doubt I will have very many firm guesses this time. But what the heck! I'll throw my vague impressions into the wind and see if I can spot some likely suspects!

1) I think the first of the two beautiful 221B Baker Towers fics this round, "Do You Observe," must be starfishstar's. They have been so enthusiastic in advocating for that verse, but have conspicuously not commented or left kudos there. Also, I know that they were concerned about whether they would have the resources to research and write for that verse in an authentic way, and the 1sentence format strikes me as a brilliant way to approach that challenge, allowing them to paint so many dazzling ideas and moments and give a kaleidoscope of glimpses into that world. It's gorgeous, it's moving, and I think it's starfishstar's.

2) "In Pursuit of a Suit" strikes me as SCFrankles's work. The lovely prose and hilarious absurdist elements are all there, I think I spotted a Dear Ladies cameo, and the deeper emotion and more melancholy reflections, all steeped in a level of detail that indicates extreme familiarity with the ACD canon, make me think this is her story. She mentioned recently that she wanted to push her writing in new directions and try to deepen the characterizations, and those elements seemed really strong to me in this fic. But she couldn't resist that pun for the title! It's like a calling card :P

3) "Frost at Midnight" is sanspatronymic's -- cold toes, fond endearments, and Victor Trevor. The evidence is inescapable!

These others I'm less sure of, but I'll go ahead and guess:

"Five Christmases and an Easter" - dogandmonkeyshow

"Kintsugi" - gardnerhill

"The Kincardine File" - smallhobbit

"Bones McCoy, Private Investigator" - ireallyshouldbedrawing

And I'll have to keep reading/watching to see if I can come up with any more guesses as I continue to catch up! :)

You know, "Five Christmases and an Easter" was a gift to me! And dogandmonkeyshow crossed my mind as well, mostly because they signed up for BBC gen fic, no pairings. So your guess is definitely a good one. BUT I also know that they love writing Mycroft, and since one of my suggestions was that I love to read about the HOlmes brothers dynamic, I feel like they wouldn't be able to resist. Plus they say that Irene is one of those characters they find boring, soooo... my guess is it's not them :)

Your reasoning is also sound! BUT as far as I can see, there were no other gen Sherlock fics this round, except for the one written as a gift for dogandmonkeyshow. And I can't see them writing a Sherlock/John, Sherlock/John/Mary, or Sherlock/Moriarty fic. So by process of elimination, I am going to put the balance of probability on them having written your fic :)

That's a good trick; it's hard to do a quality evil cackle through sealed lips. :-)

The secret is having it start sort of like a whinny-- a very nasal sort of cackle, then let it roll around in the back of the mouth for resonance before shooting back out the nose. Impossible to do with a cold and tricky to master, but well worth the effort. It's handy for circumstances where you desperately need to laugh but can't be seen to be doing so.

However, I fear I must throw a bit of a monkey wrench into your deductions by pointing out that I haven't commented or kudos-ed on *anything* yet – I am appallingly behind. (And thus have accidentally created a sneaky situation where nothing about me can be deduced by what I have or haven't commented on, heh!)

Wow! I think most of your guesses are spot on! I think "The Kincardine File" is by small hobbit too. and "In "In Pursuit of a Suit" is SCFrankles.

Aha! Today's treat, "Not Alone," has added a new wrinkle to my deductions :) I didn't think that the "Bones McCoy" portrait looked like ireallyshouldbedrawing's usual style, but I didn't see any other art in the exchange that looked more like theirs, and I figured they had probably deliberately altered their usual style to go for the noir look of the piece.

HOWEVER, it didn't occur to me that perhaps ireallyshouldbedrawing participated, not as a pinch hitter, but as a treat giver!

"Not Alone" is clearly their work, the style is unmistakable. So I will have to release "Bones McCoy" back into the wild as an unknown!

Now that we've de-anoned, I can finally say:

Yes! You were right! Not only were you right that I wrote "Do You Observe?", but also about the exact thought process behind it: I truly don't feel I have the background to write these characters, and especially not their dialogue – I think any attempt by me to render the speech of young British men living on a London council estate would be inaccurate at best, and at worst probably offensive. But then I hit on the idea of using the 1sentence format that I knew from your beautiful fic, as a way to give just glimpses into my ideas for the characters...and it worked, and I'm so grateful to have found a way into them after all. So thank you, because I only knew that format from you!

Also, It's gorgeous, it's moving, and I think it's starfishstar's. is such a beautiful and kind thing to say, and I was so touched to read this. Thank you!

I would just like to point out, madam, that 'In Pursuit of a Suit' does not involve a pun but is instead an example of internal syllabic rhyme!

But yes, even as I chose it, I knew I was going to be giving myself away ^^" Oh, and it's not specifically Hilda and Evadne on the ferry - I just seem to have a thing about women in their later years going on adventures ^__^
