Please include further details about what you’d like to receive:

Hello, hello! Thank you so much, Unknown Gift-Giver, for doing this! :) I tend to talk a lot in this section, because I know it’s very possible that you don’t know me, and you might find it helpful to get a sense of how I see these characters. But all this is meant to help you, not limit you or dictate to you at all, and of course the most important thing that will guarantee my enjoyment is that you create something that you love and enjoy yourself! Whatever that may be, believe me that I will delight in discovering it!

What can I tell you? Let’s see. Watson is my favorite character, and I always appreciate it if he can have a role in the story. I see him as intelligent, steady in the face of drama, wry, proud and yet still somewhat self-effacing (though less so in the Ritchie verse), impulsive, sometimes hot-tempered but gets over his pique quickly, generous, kind, and not quite sure what to do with himself if he doesn’t have a cause and/or a person to follow. I also imagine him as more articulate and emotionally unreserved in his writing than he generally is in person – I think, for him, writing is a release and a way to process thoughts, observations, and feelings that he might not be able to talk about with the same ease. You don’t have to try to hit all those points, of course, I just wanted to tell you a bit about my own approach to the character in case anything resonates with you, too. I love Holmes as well, of course, and for me Jeremy Brett’s interpretation of the character is a favorite. I’m also terribly fond of Mycroft, if you happen to enjoy writing him interacting with Sherlock and/or Watson.

I don’t like angst, but I can enjoy subtle conflict between characters, especially if such conflict is resolved, or makes progress toward resolution, over the course of the story.

I ship Watson with Holmes and I love established relationship or developing relationship stories that give us a chance to see how their love for each other has a solid foundation in friendship, their long history together, and their ability to work well together. In general I love romance stories where the couple’s love for, and intimate knowledge of, each other shines through while they are doing something together that is not, on the face of it, romantic, be that meeting some minor challenge of daily life or some more dramatic adventure. But if you like bringing the romance and/or sexiness into the foreground, that’s also lovely! For me, loving tenderness, banter or even cranky familiarity, ardent passion or more quiet affection – those are all things I get excited to find in their bedroom!

That being said, if you prefer to write Holmes and Watson as friends, or as some variation of queer love that is platonic, or romantic but asexual, I am also happy to receive stories in that vein. If possible, I would prefer a story that doesn’t pair either of them with people other than each other, sexually or romantically. With one exception: I like Mary, and if you want to set your story during the time that Watson is married to her, I’m happy to see their marriage portrayed as a loving and strong one. I did not add Watson/Mary to my relationship list above because I’m not requesting it, per se, but if you do include it, I love to see it portrayed positively. I prefer that Watson and Holmes not be pining for each other around his wife – if you write them during the time of his marriage, I like to imagine Watson as being honestly in love with Mary, and Holmes being content with his friendship and only allowing their relationship to change – if it does change – once Watson is once again unattached.

For fic: All of the above of course applies to fic. But if you’d like some more specific possibilities to ponder: I love magical realism and mythic elements, and it’s rare to find them incorporated into a Victorian-era Holmes fic – if you have any ideas you’d like to explore in that genre, I’d love it. Or if you’d like to transplant Holmes and Watson into a different historic time and place, with or without magical or mythic elements, I’d also be fascinated to see that. I also love more canon-compliant stories that expand on some passage in Doyle, or give us an outsider’s POV on Holmes and Watson, or that have them encounter clients from their past to see the impact they’ve made on their lives. I also love ‘getting to know you’ stories set in their early days of living together, as well as established relationship fic and retirement fic. And, for the Ritchie verse, I’m fascinated by the choice they made at the end of the last movie to have Holmes send Watson a message conveying to him the fact that he’d secretly survived Reichenbach. I love that this adaptation has canonically avoided the years of deception and grief, and I’m very interested to know how the two of them handled the hiatus after that, now that they’re both in the know. In the Murder by Decree verse, I'm afraid I'm not at all interested in the Jack the Ripper plot of the movie or in true crime generally, but if you would like to take the versions of Holmes and Watson as portrayed by Plummer and Mason and write about them outside the bounds of the film's plot, I'd love it! Tell me how they met, or how they fell in love (if they did), or let me see more of their version of Baker Street domesticity, or follow them through an adventure, case, or slice of life, or share what their retirement was like. But if none of these thoughts strike your fancy, don’t worry – anything that you write in any these verses will be wonderful!

For a vid: Any vid will delight me, seriously. But if suggestions are helpful: Watson-centric stuff is fantastic, in any given verse or across multiple verses if you like (and by the way, if you want to do a multiverse vid on any subject, feel free to bring in clips from Holmesian sources beyond the ones I requested in my sign-up if you want to). And of course, any Granada , or Ritchie-verse, or Mouse Detective vid focusing on Holmes and Watson will be delightful! I like all kinds of music. I’ve sometimes thought that Imogen Heap’s Clear the Area might make for a good Watson or Holmes/Watson vid. I think Sara Bareilles’ Kaleidoscope Heart may have interesting possibilities for a character study of Holmes or of Mycroft, although it would be really challenging to vid because it’s only 1 minute long and has so much silence in it (it’s sung a cappella with striking pauses between verses). But those are just the first songs to pop into my head, please don't feel limited to them, I really am open to anything musically. In terms of tone, I like it all so you can take it any direction you want: funny, action-y, romantic, meditative – really, anything goes! If you would like to vid for Murder by Decree, I would love anything that focuses on the warm Holmes & Watson or Holmes/Watson relationship in that film! My only caveat is that if you could avoid the more horror-style material from the Jack the Ripper side of the story as much as reasonably possible that would be great, although of course feel free to include whatever you feel the vid needs :)

For podfic: If you'd like to podfic any of my fics, that's lovely (even ones that are outside the fandoms requested in my sign-up. So, if you’d like to do one of my BBC fics, or whatever else you like, go right ahead). The only Sherlock Holmes ones that have been previously podficc'd are "Refusing the Knighthood" and "The Almost Empty House." I'd also be happy to receive podfic of another author's story - with their permission - if you think I'd enjoy it. (If you’re unsure, you’re welcome to look at my AO3 bookmarks, or you can ask me about any idea you like through the Holmestice mods).

For art: Anything focusing on Watson, Holmes & Watson, Holmes/Watson, Holmes & Mycroft, or Mycroft & Watson is very welcome. I’d especially enjoy anything featuring Edward Hardwicke’s Watson, as he’s my favorite and most Granada art favors Burke :) And of course Jude Law’s Watson or James Mason's Watson are great for art, too, or your own imagining of ACD Watson if you prefer!

I think most of my Do Not Wants have already been covered in the descriptions above, but I’ll just add a few last ones here: Please no infidelity, dub-con or non-con/rape, abortion or miscarriage, sex work/prostitution, unhappy endings, or the good guys torturing or killing the bad guys.

Thank you again! And Happy Holmestice!

I love your description of Watson here. I could see him so vividly all of the sudden. Watson is always in good hands when you write about him!

It's really you who have the beautiful way with words! "...so that both his pleasures and his pains carry a keen edge to them"...what a wonderful insight. Thank you!

Your further details bit makes me think I could expand on mine a bit. Watson is my favorite, too!
