Do Not Wants: death, torture, whump, non-con. Vidding-wise, I’m sensitive to shaky-cam-like motion and repeated fade-to-blacks, please see my most recent Dear Festividder letter.
Wants: I’m a big fan of doing right by Watson. I enjoy a Holmes who is besotted with Watson (although he doesn't need to be particularly overt about it), and who attempts to live up to what Watson deserves. I like old and deep relationships with a lot of history in them, people who know each other very well but still occasionally mistake each other's meaning and intentions. In general, I find the question of what one does with being in love far more interesting than whether one is in love. As one might guess from that, my actual kink is the intricacies of navigating a relationship.
I’m also a big fan of intertextuality, talking back to canon, unreliable narrators, dealing with canon as a constructed text, wrestling with the great unwieldly mythic legacy of canon and its adaptive traditions… These things are catnip to me, and if you’ve got some idea you want to play with, please do. Same with crossovers and fusions — I’m familiar with many of the screen adaptations, and I’m happy to read/watch a thing if you think there’s a rich crossover there. (I’m not keen on a BBC Sherlock fusion, thank you.) If you’re interested in doing an extra-Holmesian crossover (someday I will talk someone into writing a Great Brain x ACD crossover for me),grrlpup can give you insight as to whether I know the other canon or not. (Actually, grrlpup can probably get an answer to most questions without tipping me off that it’s Holmestice-related. k_e_p is also very well acquainted with my tastes.)
Prompts for specific ‘verses (this runs long, I know, but I swear I’m easy to please):
Mycroft Holmes - Abdul-Jabbar & Waterhouse: As you might be able to tell from my character list, I’d adore something Douglas-centric. The genesis and growth of Douglas and Mycroft’s relationship; the emotional fallout of the events of the novel; further adventures with Douglas and Mycroft; Douglas and Mycroft tussling over Mycroft’s civil service; Douglas’ opinion of the Diogenes; Douglas, that old hand at Holmeses, meeting wet-behind-his-ears Watson; Douglas and Watson during the Great Hiatus… Or if you have an idea of your own, run with it! However, if you’re writing a canon-era story, I’d very much like Douglas to be alive in the canon era. Also, if you’re the kind of vidder who is ambitious enough to vid books, please know that I will be enrapt.
New Russian Holmes (2013): This adapt does so many things I crave: it explicitly acknowledges that Holmes-as-written is an idealization for the popular taste; it positions Moriarty and Mycroft as flip sides of the same coin; it attempts to engage with the twin sticky issues of Britain’s empire and the institutionalized violence and power inherent in policing. It also has one of my favorite Watsons, a lovely Mrs. Hudson, an excellent boxing throughline… The main thing I don’t love about it is the handling of Irene Adler. (Why is it so popular nowadays to have Irene in Moriarty’s circle? And we shan’t even discuss the conclusion of her storyline. Fix it or ignore it altogether, your choice.) If you’re considering making a vid and wanted to bring in the 1980s Lenfilm production (compare, contrast, talkback, Lenfilm as the stories Watson is writing), I’d be thrilled. Otherwise, however, I have very little in the way of specific prompts: show me a thing that you love about this series, and I’m sure I’ll love it, too.
My Dearly Beloved Detective: For those not familiar, this is a Russian film set in the 1920s or so, in which a pair of women have been hired to fulfill society’s need for the characters Doyle created. Things I’m curious about: what drove these two to apply for those roles, what stepping into them felt like, if they ever rebel against them, what building their own partnership in the shadow of that wholly-fictional partnership felt like, all of it. Or fast-forward to the other end: what does retirement look like, from roles that are both real and not-real, in a post-atomic world? Or if you wanted to write some Holmes/Watson femslash between the two of them, that would be lovely, too: I didn’t get nearly enough of that in the movie. With respect to tone, do whatever suits your piece best: stick with the farce or dial it all the way to earnest; I trust you to know what works for what you want to do. Vidding-wise, as far as I know there’s no cleaner source available than the VHS rip I linked above? But if you decide to vid this, I promise not to mind the VHS rip. :-)
Roxburgh Hound (2002): Holmes failed to live up to what Watson deserved, and I would love to see the aftermath where he works to earn Watson’s trust again. (Successful, unsuccessful, provisional: your choice. Just make him earn it, please. Watson will not be bought off with a few gobbets of praise!) Or if you wished to supply the continuing adventures of BAMFtastic!Watson, that would please me, too. Vidding-wise, I would love to see a celebration of BAMFtastic!Watson, or an Watson-pov exploration of Holmes and Watson’s relationship. I’d rather not see a celebration of this particular Holmes, however, because I read the film as a condemnation of that particular kind of gritty anti-hero.
Elementary: Gina Cortes came on screen — a woman-loving, boxing, woman of color, one who pushes and challenges Joan Watson to defend the things she does, and my heart soared. So many opportunities for so many kinds of things: femslash to explorations of Joan’s character to a Joan-centric storyline about her relationship with ethics and the police… (And also opportunities for more boxing!) Similarly, Lin Yun came on screen, and again, so many opportunities for so many kinds of stories! Their pasts, their families, their disappointments and hopes and willingness/unwillingness to feel their own emotions…
Vidding-wise, if you feel there’s enough footage for a vid about Joan’s relationship with either of these two, I’d be thrilled. (If you want to bring in outside source for scenes that the show didn’t give us visuals for, I will applaud your enterprise!) I’d also thoroughly enjoy a Joan-centric vid, one about her hopes and dreams and disappointments and relationships. The show gives us so many tantalizing glimpses of Joan and her life before yanking the narrative focus back to Sherlock; I’d love to see something where the focus stays firmly on Joan and the complexity of her life.
Also, I know the finale is going to be happening while you’re making a thing, and that might prove awkward. Please feel free to do what you need to do to cope.
Watson & Holmes (comic): I have very little in the way of specific prompts, but I was thrilled to see in V2 that Violet and Irene know each other. You could likewise explore Holmes’ relationship with the police or community politics, or expand on the Holmes-in-peril-Watson-to-the-rescue scene that we got in V2… There are many things that would please me. And please know that if you’re the kind of vidder who can vid still-image sources, I would be thrilled to see whatever you come up with.
Further Adventures - Coules (radio): I feel like the least I could do is to give you some prompts, and yet I have none. I adore these stories, and would love to see interstitials, extensions, aftermaths, what-have-you. Go make a thing, and it will fill me with glee. And if you’re the ambitious kind of vidder who wants to vid a thing that has no visual source whatsoever, I will be enrapt to witness your vision.
