Some few of those devoted to the close study of Watson’s writings have deduced the answer. Insofar as I am aware, however, no one has ever satisfactorily explained who – or why – someone might have chosen to invent Moriarty in the first place.

As I sit here and write, looking out my bedroom window, I can see the last shrivelled leaves the wind has torn off the trees blow past. There is winter in the air. We have already had the first frost and I think it won’t be long until we will see the first snow down here. The climate in the Downs are mild, but still winter comes to us too.

It is a very peculiar feeling sitting here in this small cottage that I now share with Holmes, it is not where I imagined myself when I was young. I always had some vague notion that I would do what was expected of me, marriage, children, settling down, even though I never much felt like it. It was after all what was expected. Had I not met Holmes I indeed might have.
