Yes. I always get the impression that Holmes, for all his friendship with Watson, is essentially a lonely man. There's no one who can really understand what it's like to be in his shoes - except for Moriarty. The idea was used brilliantly in the third BBC episode, but I found it likely that it would work just as well for the canon characters.
