Oo, casting Moriarty as Holmes' lighttower! A lighttower isn't just a steady, fixed point to navigate by, but it marks a hazard to be avoided -- a hazard that you are guaranteed to wreck yourself on, if you venture too close. It's a lovely image. (And Holmes has ventured close, hasn't he??)
And I really like the extended arachnophobia metaphor, too -- a whole journey of feelings right there, and all of them intense ones, too.
