The timeline was a way to keep all these white male Watsons differentiated from each other so they weren't all a big clump of guys who think alike. (I sure would like to see the beginnings of that Jude Law/RDJ partnership, Guy Ritchie, HINT HINT.)
Victorians were big on futuristic and modernistic stuff, so even if the Watsons were freaked out by NYC they'd still be happy to take a lot of the cool stuff in stride (phones, pizza, washing machines, taking orders from a non-white woman).
