Well, that was painful, but of course he would rely on Mrs Watson. Who else could he rely on after I had betrayed him and lied to him and let him think I was dead?
This is all so good, but let me single out the bit copied above: Irene telling Holmes quite bluntly that Watson's a mess, and Holmes ... hearing her description well enough to record it, and yet turning aside instantly from the weight of its implications. Just terrific.
