Summer 2021 Guessing Post

Thank you so much for another wonderful round of Holmestice! The mods want to say THANK YOU to all the creators who joined us this round. Being in this community with you is a joy and an honour.

Reveals and the Master List go up on June 21st. Until then, please enjoy and comment on all the lovely fanworks. (If you haven't thanked your creator for your own gift yet, please do!) Creators, please do NOT respond to Dreamwidth comments or post your works elsewhere on the Internet until reveals go up in the community. You may of course reply to comments on AO3, which preserves your anonymity.

In the meanwhile, stay tuned: treats are coming up! For anyone thinking of making a treat, we will accept treats until reveals, so if there's a prompt that inspires you, please have at it! Just use the regular submission guidelines and send your headers to holmesticemods@gmail.com.

If you'd like to guess who created what in this round, here's a list of all the contributors for the main gifts. (You'll have to put in some extra work to guess the treat-makers!) Go ahead and take a guess! It's all in good fun.

Reading these comments feels akin to being twelve years old and walking into the cafeteria on your first day at a new school. In classic new kid fashion, I'm quite delighted and a bit sheepish to find my name on a few of them!

I have just one guess, and it's based on very tenuous evidence indeed: Did graycardinal write my wonderful gift "Box One"? I first learned of Holmestice through one of Gray Cardinal's posts in the fanfiction group Letters of Mary. One of the admins of that group, and dare I say the hub of the Mary Russell fandom, is a lovely woman by the name of Alice. A minor character in "Box One" is named -- aha -- Alice.

Oh what a lovely observation! I hope that Gray Cardinal did write it, and that he did fold a little acknowledgement of Real!Alice into the story :) My two top contenders for BOX ONE are Gray Cardinal and Sanguinity, and I do believe I will put my money on Gray Cardinal!

As I note elsewhere, I owe a considerable hat-tip to language_escapes for creating a story that really does look like one I might have written (and for serving as a particularly good diverter of attention in the late stages of the guessing phase).

We must therefore assume that, unless language_escapes is also on the LoM list (possible, and most likely under a different persona, as the conventions for handles are different over there), any homage to LoM's Alice was unintentional at most.

I was on the LoM list... oh my heavens, years upon years ago? As in, right when it started? But I struggled with the format, so I rarely posted. And it was under a different screen name, but I can't remember which one! So alas, it was an accident.

Ooh, I did wonder if, as a Mary Russell person, you heard of Holmestice via graycardinal and Letters of Mary. Glad you found your way to us! :-)

Rest assured that the delight is mutual, even where the guesses have been somewhat misplaced (you will note that my specialty is comic-relief guessing even when I don't necessarily intend it quite that way).

In the event, language_escapes and iwantthatcoat, with some able if unintentional assistance from rachelindeed, did me a great favor this round by writing excellent stories that would usually be right in my wheelhouse. And we got quite a lot of podfic this round as well, which made it significantly trickier to work out just who was responsible for what.
