I have just one guess, and it's based on very tenuous evidence indeed: Did graycardinal write my wonderful gift "Box One"? I first learned of Holmestice through one of Gray Cardinal's posts in the fanfiction group Letters of Mary. One of the admins of that group, and dare I say the hub of the Mary Russell fandom, is a lovely woman by the name of Alice. A minor character in "Box One" is named -- aha -- Alice.
