I enjoy a wide range of Holmesian adaptations, even more than are listed here, and I like to think of myself as generally pretty easy to please. Before I get into specifics for the adaptations requested, just some general thoughts. I really like it when Holmes and Watson are truly partners; where each bring their own strengths and weaknesses to the table and manage to meet each other halfway there. They’re my two favourite characters of all time, so you’ll never go wrong on focusing on those two. That being said, I LOVE secondary characters, and I’ve always enjoyed when fandom fleshes their stories out. I like my sly little Canon references in adaptations, and I love it when people incorporate Canon into fanfic in their own way. I’m a sucker for pining and declarations of love (although some declarations of love don’t look like it!), but I also love crunchy, meaty conversations where people really have to talk to each other. And while you’ll note it in my section about ratings, please know that while I enjoy a good romance, I’m not the target audience for anything super sexual.
Now for some specifics…
Mary Russell series – Mary Russell was one of the first pastiches I read as a kid, and she remains one of my heroes. I love that she can go toe-to-toe with Holmes and win; I love that she’s stubborn and bullheaded, sometimes wrongly so; I love that she’s clever, and smart, and yet oddly oblivious to certain things in life because she has also been sheltered in some ways. I specifically am fond of her relationships with the women in her life. I would love for her to meet Iris (from Justice Hall) again, and Iris’ partner, because I felt like she and Iris really complemented each other. I want more with her and Ronnie – the latest book, Island of the Mad gave me some, but I want more, either from during University or after. I’d actually really love to see some tags to the latest book in general, as it had a wealth of good stuff in it to explore. Russell tends to find at least one new woman in each book that she connects with, so any of them would be awesome as well. I’d love to see a further rehabilitation of Watson’s character; while King has walked back her initial depiction of Watson, there is still a ways to go. I’d love an honest conversation between Russell and Watson; was there a reason Watson was portrayed that way at first in Russell’s story? He was involved with planning the wedding, did he talk to her afterwards? Why is he always off around the world in the series? I’m also intrigued by the idea of Russell slowly but surely being left on her own. King has continued to chip away the characters that Russell really relied on towards the beginning of the series – where do you think that’s going? A “book trailer” fanvid would be a cool thing to see, or a constructed universe vid. Any sort of graphics project would be interesting, composed of “found elements” of Russell’s life—what are some of the other things in that trunk King received way back in book one? And for fanart, I haven’t a clue because I’m not an artist, but there generally needs to be more Russellian fanart in the world. Essentially, I love this book series, I think the parts that are less awesome leave room for fixing, and I adore Mary Russell forever and always.
Enola Holmes – Enola is so very sure of herself, and yet so very inexperienced, and I love how those two elements come together in her books. Some specific things I’ve always thought about for fic include: what did Enola do during Reichenbach? What is Enola’s relationship with Watson post-series? Enola makes a reference to Holmes having a mental illness in the first book- how does she come to this conclusion? And surely there is more to Enola and Lady Cecily’s story; they must meet again, they must become true friends or more, they must have further adventures, and I want to know all about those. There is a film coming out at some point for this, so a constructed reality vid is always cool. For fanart, I’d love something with both Lady Cecily and Enola.
Shelby Holmes – These are such sweet little stories. I’d love to see something slice-of-life for Shelby and John, maybe non-case related. And it would be cool to see Shelby’s nemesis come back in some way. Oh, and I want to see Lestrade and Shelby and John come to work together well at some point. I haven’t yet read the third book, though I do own it and will likely have read it by the time Holmestice starts posting. EDIT: I have now read the third book! My favourite bit was Shelby ruminating on bullying and her own behaviour, and I'd love to see more of that. I also find the art style for these books absolutely charming.
A Study in Honor – Janet is just about the best Watson I have seen in years. Give me more of her! I have no real specific prompts for this, I just really enjoyed the book and am craving more.
Charlotte Holmes – Someone needs to fix this series. The reason this series is the exception to my Holmes/Watson relationship love is because the relationship is SO toxic and gross and makes my skin crawl that I can’t even ignore the yuck to get to the yay. I would love if someone could find a way to repair it so that maybe I’d be okay with Jamie and Charlotte being in the same room. However, I’m also okay with leaning into the yuck: give me a Charlotte who walks away from Jamie for good, who realizes that that Watson doesn’t need to be her Watson (and makes Lena her Watson instead, because Lena is amazing and needs way more love). Give me a Charlotte who even walks away from detective work, realizing how it’s destroying her. I want to see more of the end chapters from the third book, as Charlotte begins to finally get to explore the world on her own terms. I want to see Uncle Leander’s relationship with Charlotte grow more steady. I’d love Charlotte and Lena in a relationship at some point because, again, Lena is amazing, and probably far better suited to being with Charlotte. Ultimately, I think Charlotte has a lot of potential as a character and can really grow in a lot of different directions, but my patience with Jamie is… thin. If you get matched on this series, unless you feel very confident in handling Jamie, it may be best to omit him altogether.
Mrs Hudson and Mary Watson Investigations – It makes me so sad that more people haven’t hopped on this series, given just how lovely it is. We’ve gotten some conversations between Holmes and Mrs Hudson in the series itself, acknowledging quietly what Mrs Hudson is doing, but what about Holmes and Mary? I’d love to see how Holmes approaches her, and how Mary reacts and handles him. I’d also enjoy seeing how Watson and Mary came to a decision where he would teach her medical stuff. And I’d love to see Mary, Mrs Hudson, and Irene team up once more.
Test of the Professionals – I love how Wilson writes Lestrade and the Yarders. Literally give me an entire story about the Yarders doing something together and I’d be over the moon. I owe my entire fascination with the Yarders to this series, and now I’m always craving more.
The Whole Art of Detection – There are a whole bunch of different short stories in here; episode tags for some of them would be cool! Fleshing out some of the secondary characters would be awesome, too.
Elementary – I’m a season behind, but I’m also thoroughly spoiled, so no worries there. This is the one fandom where I request: no fic. I’m in the middle of an Elementary story myself and find it hard to read fanfic for a fandom when I’m writing, so: no fic for Elementary. However, I would give my right arm for a fanvid that incorporates more than just season 1 and some season 2 footage – give me a frickin’ love montage between Joan and Sherlock, there are so many visually awesome moments one can use! We need more fanvids that use later seasons. I also LOVE Elementary fanart and have a lot of it posted around my house and in my office at work; I love small moments between Joan and Sherlock, little slices-of-life.
Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century – No specific prompts. I really like Lestrade, though, and I’m fascinated by Watson and his attempt to become the original Watson.
Great Mouse Detective – No specific prompts. Basil is probably one of my favourite depictions of Holmes of all time, though. I love that he keeps putting his foot in it, but apologizes and always tries to do better next time… even if he doesn’t always succeed. I’d be interested to see how he and Dawson forge a true partnership.
Howard Holmes – These guys are goofballs and I love that spirit of the show. Give me a romcom for this set of Watson and Holmes! A ridiculous fanvid! Hilarious art with them getting up to no good! This is my go-to comfort Holmesian series; when I just need something to give me warm fuzzies, to make me laugh, I turn to Howard Holmes. I’d like any fan piece to stick with the good feels.
Whitehead Holmes – And yet, despite the fact that some of the scripts are the same and the writer is the same, I feel like Whitehead Holmes has a slightly more ominous atmosphere than Howard Holmes. There is something about this Holmes… still waters run deep. If you wanted a more angsty piece or a darker piece, but along the same veins of Howard Holmes, I would say dip your toes into Whitehead Holmes. That being said, there is still silliness in this series. Tell me why Holmes loves marmalade so much. More baby!fic as that’s always hilarious to me. A fanvid all about Watson’s eyeliner. Go wild.
New Russian Holmes – No specific prompt. I love the darkness of this series, the “truth behind the tales” that is always a thousand times more bleak, more unhappy, than Canon itself. Maybe adapt another Canon story into this universe?
Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: The Thames Murder – This is an awesome game where you have to solve mysteries, as a Baker Street Irregular, using a small set of initial clues, a London directory, a map, and some London newspapers. I love this game to death, and have played through 6 of the 10 initial mysteries. A lot of them, however, open themselves up to fic being written about them, as there are new characters, new backstories, new everything to explore. It’s an odd request, but if you wanted to craft a story (from one of the first six mysteries only!) from this game, I would be tickled.
Honour Among Punks – This story was never completed. I still want to know the ending.
Watson and Holmes – I’d love to know more about Violet and Irene.
Bert Coules – No specific requests.
221B Baker Towers – Like many others, I’d just love to see more in this universe. I don’t have any specific requests, just MORE.
Also, generally speaking, I’m always interested in crossing over multiple Holmesian universes. I am always intrigued to see how different characters would do in another adaptation, and how some might meet. I love it even more if it is feasibly possible for characters to meet within the context of their own universe. For example, Mary Russell and Enola Holmes COULD, in theory, meet. Shelby Holmes and Charlotte Holmes COULD, in theory, meet and could meet Janet Watson and Sara Holmes from Study in Honor somewhere down the line as adults. When timelines line up, let the characters interact!
Special requests: As you can see under the “what I’m willing to create” section, I have three things marked with a caveat. For Charlotte Holmes, it’s that I won’t write Charlotte/Jamie unless I can just kill him off or ignore him entirely. I’m just not in a place right now where I could try to rehabilitate Jamie’s character, as much as I might want to try it in the future. For Elementary, I can only write something for season one, no later. For Study in Emerald, I don’t have any particular interest in writing within the original universe, but I’d be interested in applying the theme to another Holmesian adaptation (ie, A Study in Emerald Charlotte Holmes, or a Study in Emerald Mary Russell, etc). I view it more as a filter than a short story I’d like to expand, if that makes sense? But I wanted to list it just in case. I’m always willing to crossover Holmesian universes.
Also, because it seems like every time Holmestice has come up in the past two years, I’ve been in the middle of a major life transition, and this time is no different: I am in the middle of purchasing a house, and will be hopefully moving into it during the month of November; mods please bear with me.
