Such lovely details, and perfect ones - how much do I love the description of the particular slant of light in the train, the beer they drank, the sights remembered along the way? (I'm reading and adoring but also taking notes - such clever and artful use of detail!) The contrasting realities - of Holmes, and of Mary - are handled so adeptly. The language itself is as another character, unobtrusive, not calling too much attention to itself, but like a wash of colour which brings everything into sharper focus. Beautiful. Holmes' confession made me swoon. And the ending! Perfect. Watson's pain is made tolerable because we know what happens next. I have no doubt I'll be sighing happily over this for quite some time, just savouring it. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous fic.
