Thanks! I make no claim of expertise and I only have passing knowledge of 7PER. I was setting this story before Watson was assured of Holmes recovery, and took liberties with Watson's knowledge of Mary's illness. Martha Freud, at the time of this story, would have been dealing with two toddlers and another baby on the way. In the end, Watson would be disappointed that Holmes did not want his constant support and friendship, but he also might see it as a sign of Holmes' recovery and strength.
